Vendor Code: Islamic trade ethics

Fiqh al-muʿāmalāt: the rules of buying and selling (al-bayʿ) on NuHalal

Last updated 12 October 2026 · Version 2026-10-12

Draft: this text is being reviewed by a qualified Islamic scholar and a lawyer before NuHalal opens to the public. The meaning will not change without notice.

NuHalal exists so that Muslims in Finland can buy with trust. Trade is part of our deen: Allah has permitted trade and forbidden riba (Al-Baqarah 2:275), and trade must take place by mutual consent (An-Nisāʾ 4:29).

This Code sets out the Islamic principles of buying and selling that every vendor on NuHalal agrees to follow. It applies together with Finnish law. Where Finnish law asks more of you, follow it as well.

1. Sell only what is halal and wholesome (ḥalāl and ṭayyib)

  • Every product you list must be halal, and food must be safe and fit to eat (Al-Baqarah 2:168).
  • Never list pork, alcohol or other intoxicants, anything that contains them, or meat that was not slaughtered as your certificate states.
  • If a product is doubtful (shubha), for example an ingredient whose source you don't know, don't list it until you have checked.
  • Keep halal and non-halal goods separate in storage, handling and equipment, so nothing is cross-contaminated.

2. Be truthful in every description (ṣidq)

  • Describe products exactly as they are: name, ingredients, origin, weight, best-before date and certification.
  • Tell the customer about any defect you know of before the sale. Hiding a defect is cheating (ghish). The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever cheats is not of us” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim).
  • Use photos of the actual product or its real packaging.
  • Never claim a certificate, certifier or halal status you don't have. A false halal claim is a serious breach of this Code and of Finnish law.

3. Clear terms, no uncertainty (no gharar)

  • The price, quantity and what is included must be clear before the customer orders. No hidden fees.
  • Only offer what you have or can certainly supply. If something runs out, mark it out of stock or tell the customer straight away.
  • Don't sell things whose existence, quality or delivery is uncertain. The Prophet ﷺ forbade sales that involve gharar (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim).

4. Full measure and fair weight

  • Give full weight and measure (Al-Muṭaffifīn 83:1–3; Al-Isrāʾ 17:35). Use accurate, checked scales.
  • The weight and price the customer pays for must match what they receive.

5. Mutual consent and fair dealing (tarāḍin)

  • A sale is valid only with the free consent of both sides. No pressure, false urgency or bait offers.
  • Don't post or ask for fake reviews, and don't push prices up with false demand (najsh).
  • Don't hold back goods to raise their price (iḥtikār). The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever hoards is a wrongdoer” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim).

6. No riba (interest)

  • Don't charge interest, late-payment interest or interest-based credit on sales made through NuHalal.
  • Payment on NuHalal is made at pickup, at the price agreed in the order.

7. Keep your promises and treat customers well

  • Keep the price, quantity and pickup time you confirm. If something changes, tell the customer before they set off.
  • Answer customers' questions honestly and politely.
  • If a product is defective or not as described, put it right: replace it, refund it, or let the customer cancel (khiyār al-ʿayb). This also meets Finnish consumer law.

8. Accountability

  • NuHalal checks certificates and may visit or audit your shop. Cooperate openly and honestly.
  • Breaking this Code can lead to strikes, hidden listings or suspension, as set out in the Vendor Terms. A false halal claim leads to immediate suspension.
  • If you are unsure about a ruling, ask NuHalal or a qualified scholar before you list the product.

We ask Allah to put barakah in your trade. The Prophet ﷺ said about the buyer and the seller: “If they speak the truth and make things clear, their sale will be blessed. If they hide things and lie, the blessing of their sale will be wiped out” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī).
